Stop and Smell the Roses

Enveloped in greenery and blooming flowers around me, a cup of tea next to my laptop patiently awaits my attention. The weather is pleasantly beautiful. Sunshine has been playing peek-a-boo with a yellow rose fluttering in the breeze, for quite a while now. I hear sparrows chirping, as i do every morning, I see pigeons taking flight and a honeybee seems way too interested in what I’m doing right now, for I possibly cannot explain why it keeps coming back to check on me often. Sitting in the balcony that was carefully done to be my dreamy getaway spot, I’m filled with gratitude, to be able to enjoy mornings like these. I’m thankful that we still have birds visiting us, the plants blooming, the colors of flowers around me, and the solace I find here. I’m grateful, grateful to be able to cherish these little things, grateful to find joy in it.

We’re all too busy leading ideal lives, checking things off our list, chasing perfection and keeping up with the times, that we just can’t afford to look around and be thankful for things anymore. We have our eyes on the next big promotion, the next house to buy, and the next war to discuss, that we forget to notice the simple things around us, and the simple joys they bring.

Like it or not, toxic people do exist, and more often, they exist too close to us, right in our circles; it could be a friend, a colleague, a partner or a family member. Relationships that are supposed to nurture and build you, can sometimes do just the opposite, and bring you down instead.

Surprisingly, a lot of us put up with toxic relationships, because we don’t find a way out, or we don’t realize that we’re stuck in a toxic bind.

Self Love, and Why It’s Important

Would you treat a friend, like you treat yourself?

If we could rate the people we are unkind to, we’d be the first to top our own list. “Love yourself”, we often hear, but why is it so difficult to follow such a positive thought?

Kindness, I believe, should begin at home, and let that home, begin with your heart. Our conditioning to be humble, sometimes affects us negatively, when we misunderstand self love for arrogance. We are too shy to take compliments, too humble to applaud our own achievements and too harsh on our mistakes. We fail to recognize the wonderful beings that we are, and are most times looking for reminders from the outside. We’re quick to become our own critic, but we take our time to be our own cheerleaders.

Self love isn’t merely a cool, overused word on the internet. In fact, if anything, I think it’s the most unused element. We get so busy dealing with life, that we forget the first person who needs our attention, our own self! Working out, having a good warm beverage on a cold day, spending time doing what we love, are all forms of self care, but self love goes a step ahead.

The ABC of Emotional Abuse

Relationships are supposed to be happy! They may have their share of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, they are supposed to be loving and supporting. The sad reality though, is that it isn’t the same always. Where there are happy relationships, there are also depressing, abusive and toxic relationships. One kind that stands out, is an emotionally abusive relationship.

Emotional abuse, although very common, often goes unrecognized and is difficult to understand. Two reasons make it difficult to recognize what emotional abuse is.

  1. Like physical abuse, there is no physical pain, scars or wounds that you can point out to.
  2. The abuser shatters the confidence of the victim so much, that they end up thinking it is their fault, that the relationship is abnormal.
