Choose Rituals, Not Will Power – What I Learned Today

As mentioned in a previous post, I have replaced my work commute’s playlist, with motivational audios and self help audio books. I came across something interesting today, and thought of all the times I’ve learned something new in my commutes, that’s worth sharing. So, say hello to my “What I Learned Today series”, where I’ll share interesting learnings I come across now and then.

Ever wondered why that diet you started ended abruptly, just a few days after you stocked your fridge with the best of diet food and veggies, or why you couldn’t stick to your morning routine or go to the gym, despite trying  your best? I struggle with this all the time! Turns out, it’s not willpower that helps us make changes, but turning routine into rituals, that does. In one of his speeches, Tony Robbins says, when you decide to make a change, or work towards something, you got to bring yourself to be consistent, no matter how you feel.

Do you ever find yourself scared, or slightly skeptic, in the middle of a perfectly happy phase? When everything seems to go on well, do you wonder secretly how long will the happiness last? When things are absolutely fine, do you find yourself worried that something bad will soon happen to compensate for all the good you’ve been receiving? If you’ve been smiling and nodding in affirmative to these questions, be assured that you’re not alone in the journey.

Where Will Frustration in a Traffic Jam Take You?

Why do we get angry in a traffic jam?

There was a time when I’d literally end up in tears, the next stage after anger, when I’d get stuck in traffic. I’d try it all, swearing at other drivers ahead, cursing the bad roads, screaming my lungs out, even pulling out my hair, until I questioned myself one day “Where will frustration in a traffic jam take me? Ahead? Certainly not.” While several around me lose their cool, I am now surprised to find myself calm and cheerful, since I had long made peace with traffic, knowing I have two ways to deal with a situation I have no control over, lose my mind over it and let negative emotions take over, or stay calm and enjoy the alone time I get.

Life is unpredictable, and so are our minds, and when the two combine, there is bound to be fear. What are you scared of?

Are you scared of being forgotten? Slowly fading in time, away from everything you know, and everything you are? Would it scare you any less, if I were to tell you, it doesn’t matter really if the world remembers you, all that matters is that you don’t forget your own true self in the journey of life.

Soulmates — Imperfect and Real

Soulmates. Unlike fairy tales, they don’t come riding on white horses or in princess’ gowns. They’ll enter your life when you least expect it. Sometimes, they’ll be right next to you all along, but it may take ages for you to recognize them. Sometimes you’ll have to kiss a lot of frogs before you reach them, sometimes you won’t.

Things You Aren’t…

The world can be a real cruel place to live in. Sinners judge other sinners here, for sinning differently. Self appointed judges are always waiting to pass judgements on lives they have absolutely no idea about. Trolls seem to have given themselves an elite social status. Bullies don’t seem to be turning a new leaf anytime soon. In a world filled with several do’s and don’ts here’s a kind reminder, that you aren’t…

You aren’t dumb if you don’t score well in class. The education system needs to learn better ways to judge your IQ.
